The big “Predator” reboot hit theaters this weekend, and while the new installment failed to set a new opening weekend for the franchise, the vicious hunter did win the top spot on the domestic charts. The dramatic-thriller “A Simple Favor” also hit theaters this weekend but both of the new releases will have to battle a wide-array of new releases next week as the September box-office comes to a close.

FOX’s “The Predator” opened at number-one this weekend with a $24M debut across 4,037 locations. “The Predator” was directed by Shane Black, the film features Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, and Olivia Munn.

If you would like to compare that opening to the previous films in the franchise, the first “Predator” movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger opened back in 1987 and made $12M on opening weekend before grossing over $98M worldwide. The follow-up with Danny Glover only made $8.7M on its opening weekend but made $57M worldwide in 1990. One of the most successful installments to the franchise was “Alien Vs. Predator,” which made over $38M on its opening weekend before grossing $172M worldwide in 2004. That film featured Ewen Bremner, Sanaa Lathan, and Lance Henriksen. “Aliens Vs. Predator – Requiem” had a $10M opening in 2007 and the film made over $128M worldwide. Before “The Predator” reboot, “Predators” was the latest release in 2010, the film had a $24M opening before making $127M worldwide. That film featured Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Laurence Fishburne, and Alice Braga.

Warner Bros. Pictures “The Nun” dropped to second-place overall on the domestic-charts this week but still brought in another $18M across 3,876 locations. The film, now in its second week in theaters, has made over $85M domestically. “The Nun” was directed by Corin Hardy, the film features Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, and Jonas Bloquet.

The thriller “A Simple Favor” debuted in third place this weekend, bringing in $16M across 3,102 locations. “A Simple Favor” was directed by Paul Feig, the film stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, and Henry Golding. “White Boy Rick” was another new release this weekend, the film debuted in fourth place overall after bringing in $8.8M across 2,504 locations. “White Boy Rick” was directed by Yann Demange, the film features Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bel Powley, Rory Cochrane, and Bruce Dern.

“Crazy Rich Asians,” another film from Warner Bros. Pictures, remained in the top five for another week after grossing $8.7M across 3,385 locations. This weekend’s gross raises the film’s five-week domestic total to just over $149M after five weeks. “Crazy Rich Asians” was directed by Jon Chu, the film stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, and Awkwafina.

Next weekend moviegoers can choose between Eli Roth’s fantasy-thriller “The House With A Clock In Its Walls,” with Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Colleen Camp, and Kyle MacLachlan, and the drama “Life Itself” from the creator of “This is Us,” Dan Fogelman. That film stars Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, and Annette Bening. There are also two big limited-releases to check out next weekend, the high-octane thriller from Sundance “Assassination Nation” with Bella Thorne and Suki Waterhouse and “Colette” with Keira Knightley, Dominic West, and Fiona Shaw.
