In a surprise announcement to fans, Emmy Rossum announced on social-media that she will be leaving Showtime‘s hit show “Shameless”. Rossum has been on the show since the pilot episode and has been part of the cast for the last nine seasons. An outpouring of support from fans came after the announcement but it’s still hard to imagine the show without her character.
Rossum made the announcement earlier this afternoon on social-media, where she thanked fans for sticking with her character over the last eight seasons and said goodbye to her fellow cast-mates. Rossum told fans, “I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told” Emmy Rossum ended the long letter to fans with, “I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”
The series has been an enormous success for Showtime and for the other actors involved, and it seems that the show will continue without Rossum, at least for now. The show is just about to kickoff the new season, which Rossum already shot. If you want to set a reminder, Season 9 of “Shameless” is set to premiere in two-parts starting on September 9, 2018.
In a statement released earlier today, Creator John Wells said, “We are hard at work now creating a Season 9 finale which we hope will provide a Gallagher-worthy sendoff for Fiona that honors the great work Emmy has done.” Wells added, “It is always bittersweet when an ensemble member decides to move out of the proverbial house, but our door will always remain open for Fiona to return home for a visit, or to move back in.”
It will be interesting to see which of the characters fills the Rossum-slot in the story lines but it certainly seems that Rossum’s character isn’t being killed off at least. If the show does continue on for a few more seasons, it will be nice to see Rossum return for the big series-finale.
