The “Spawn” movie has added another high-profile name to the crew, the Director and Effects Specialist from “The Walking Dead,” Greg Nicotero, has joined the team and will help design the reboot. Nicotero is an award-winning executive producer, director, and make-up special effects creator on “The Walking Dead” and his company, KNB EFX, will create the new Spawn design for the upcoming McFarlane/ Blumhouse Spawn feature film.
This won’t be the first time that the McFarlane, Nicotero and the KNB EFX group have worked together, the crew collaborated on the 1997 “Spawn” movie as well. That installment opened at number-two at the box-office, behind the Harrison Ford hit “Air Force One,” but grossed over $54M domestically. The original “Spawn” went on to make over $87M worldwide and featured Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo, and Martin Sheen.
“I’m a long-time fan of Greg’s work and the projects his company, KNB have done throughout the years,” said McFarlane “Working with him once again, to re-invent the Spawn ‘look’ so it will match the supernatural theme in the movie, is going to be a fun process.”
Earlier this year, McFarlane announced an ensemble of award-winning talent for the Spawn movie cast. Those names include Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Jamie Foxx (Ray, Django Unchained, The Amazing Spider-man) as Spawn, and Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker, Wind River, The Avengers) as the character Twitch.
The new adaptation will be an R-rated reimagining of the characters and world that make up “Spwan,” and will be McFarlane’s feature-film directorial debut. McFarlane is partnering with Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, the producing force behind recent hits like “Get Out,” “Split” and “The Purge franchise,” and the film will be an adaptation of the popular Spawn comic-book character, which was created by McFarlane.
We don’t have a release date for the film at this time but we are hoping that “Spawn” will make an appearance at New York Comic-Con this year.
