Weekend Box Office: ‘The Meg’ Bites Into a $44M Opening

This weekend at the box-office is all about thrillers, Warner Bros. Pictures released the new shark thriller “The Meg” with Jason Statham and Sony Pictures released “The Slender Man” with Joey King. Next weekend we will take a break from the thriller genre with the release of “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Alpha,” but Mark Wahlberg’s next action-thriller will be gunning for the top-spot on the charts.
“The Meg” did manage to open at number-one this weekend, bringing in over $44M across 4,118 locations. If you want to put The Meg’s opening in perspective, the 2017 shark-thriller “47 Meters Down” with Mandy Moore made $11M on opening weekend and Blake Lively’s “The Shallows” made $16.9M that same year. “The Meg” was directed by Jon Turteltaub, the film features Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose, and Jessica McNamee.
The new shark-thriller pushed “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” down to second-place, the action-thriller still brought in over $20M domestically across 3,888 locations and has now made over $161M domestically since its debut in theaters just three-weeks. “Mission Impossible 6” was directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film stars Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Angela Bassett, and Alec Baldwin.
Disney’s “Christopher Robin” landed in third-place on the domestic charts this week, bringing in $12.4M across 3,602 locations. The live-action adaptation has a two-week domestic total of $50M. “Christopher Robin” was directed by Marc Forster, the film stars Tom McCarthy, Alex Ross Perry, Ewan McGregor and Allison Schroeder.
The thriller “Slender Man” did manage to open on the top-five this week but the film only made $11.3M across 2,358 locations. “The Slender Man” was directed by Sylvain White, the film features Joey King, Julia Goldani Telles, and Jaz Sinclair.
Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” also opened on the top-five list, bringing in $10.7M across 1,512 locations. “BlacKkKlansman” was directed by Spike Lee and features John David Washington, Adam Driver, and Laura Harrier.
The big release next weekend will be “Crazy Rich Asians,” a landmark comedy from director Jon M. Chu starring Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, and Ken Jeong. The other two films releasing next week are the family-drama “Alpha” starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Natassia Malthe, and Leonor Varela, and the action-thriller “Mile 22” with Lauren Cohan, Mark Wahlberg, and Ronda Rouse.
