Audiences were almost perfectly split at the box-office this weekend, choosing between the actioner “The Equalizer 2” and the musical-comedy “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”. Meanwhile, films like Dwayne Johnson’s “Skycraper” and Chris Pratt’s “Jurassic World 2” fell from the Top Five this weekend, making room for the new releases and other summer favorites.
Sony’s “The Equalizer 2” is expected to make $35.8M across 3,388 locations this weekend. “The Equalizer 2” was directed by Antoine Fuqua and features Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Ashton Sanders. Universal Pictures’ “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” isn’t too far behind, the film is expected to make $34.3M across 3,317 locations. “Mamma Mia! 2” was directed by Ol Parker, the film features Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, and Cher.
“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” also from Sony Pictures, made another $23M this weekend, raising the film’s two-week total to just over $91M domestically. “Hotel Transylvania 3” was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, the film features the voice-talents of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg.
Disney’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” made another $16M to claim fourth-place this weekend, the film has now grossed over $164M domestically in just three-weeks. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” was directed by Peyton Reed, the film stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. Disney also took fifth-place with “Incredibles 2,” the animated-comedy made $11.5M this weekend, raising the film’s six-week total to just over $557M domestically.
Not making the Top Five but worth mentioning is the film “Unfriended: Dark Web,” the horror-thriller made $3.4M across 1,546 locations.
All of these films will have to battle two very big releases next weekend. “Mission: Impossible 6” is releasing nationwide next weekend alongside the Warner Bros. Pictures animated comedy “Teen Titans Go! To The Movies”.
