Warner Bros. Pictures is moving the “Godzilla” franchise forward with a new installment called “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”. The film will follow the blockbuster hits “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” and is the latest project from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. The trailer was first shown to those in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con this afternoon but fans of the monster icon can watch the trailer below thanks to a quick upload from the studio.
The MonsterVerse is expanding in the new installment, which will have Godzilla fight against some of the most popular monsters in pop-culture history. According to the studio the film “follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters”. These gigantic brutes will include Godzilla, who will fight with Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah. The studio goes on to tease, “When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”
As we mentioned earlier the previous two films have reigned supreme at the box-office. WB’s “Godzilla” had a $93M opening weekend back in 2014, the film then went on to make over $200M domestically and over $529M worldwide. “Kong: Skull Island” did even better, starting with an opening weekend of $61M in 2017, the film eventually grossed over $566M worldwide. This isn’t the first time that a cinematic ‘monster battle’ has been made, but we are excited to see the big-budget result of this new installment. “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” was directed by Michael Dougherty, the film features Bradley Whitford, Millie Bobby Brown, and Vera Farmiga.
Fans do have a bit of a wait before the film hits theaters nationwide. “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is scheduled to release on May 31, 2019.
