It was action against animation at the box office this weekend as “Hotel Transylvania 3” took on “Skyscraper” in theaters nationwide. Both films featured high-profile actors and exotic summer locations this weekend but the two films will have to battle a series of sequels next week if they want to stay on-top.
At the top of the charts this weekend was “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” the animated-comedy brought in over $44M across 4,267 locations. “Hotel Transylvania 3” was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, the film features the voice-talents of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg. The original “Hotel Transylvania” hit theaters in 2012, earning $42M on opening weekend before grossing $358M worldwide. The sequel released in 2015 and made over $48M over the opening weekend before ending its theatrical run with over $473M.
Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” dropped to second-place overall this weekend but still brought in almost $29M across 4,206 locations. The Marvel actioner has now made over $132M domestically in just two-weeks. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” was directed by Peyton Reed, the film stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly.
Universal Pictures’ “Skyscraper” debuted at number-three this weekend, a relatively low showing for Dwayne Johnson. The action-packed thriller made $25M across 3,782 locations. “Skyscraper” was written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell, and Pablo Schreiber.
Disney’s “Incredibles 2” dropped to fouth-place with a $16M weekend across 3,705 locations. The animated-comedy has been in theaters for five-weeks at this point and has made over $535M domestically. “Incredibles 2” was written and directed by Brad Bird, the film features the voice-talents of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, and Sarah Vowell.
“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” another film from Universal Pictures, wrapped up the top-five this week with a $15.5M weekend gross across 3,695 locations. The dino-favorite has now made over $363M in just four-weeks. “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” was directed by J.A. Bayona, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, James Cromwell, Geraldine Chaplin, and Toby Jones.
As we mentioned earlier, next weekend will offer a very eclectic mix of sequels. Moviegoers can choose between “The Equalizer 2” with Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Bill Pullman; “Mamma Mia 2” featuring Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, and Meryl Streep; and the thriller “Unfriended 2” from writer-director Stephen Susco.
