A sequel to the 2009 hit “Zombieland” is in the works and it will be bringing back the original cast of fan-favorites. Sony Pictures is currently wrestling up Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin, all of whom where featured in the original release almost a decade ago.

If everything goes according to plan, Ruben Fleischer will return to the franchise as well, directing the long-awaited sequel. According to reports form THR, original writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese will also return to work on the script. Fleisher just recently wrapped-up a project with Sony Pictures, the popular director was at the helm for the soon-to-be released Spider-Man spinoff “Venom“.

The new Zombieland project is expected to go into production early next year and the film will most likely shoot for a September or October release. If the film does release in October, the sequel will release on the original film’s 10th anniversary. “Zombieland 2” will most likely work the decade long time-gap into the plot of the film and fans of the franchise should be excited to see their favorite zombie-hunters returning to the big screen.

“This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time – and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail,” said Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures. “These are some of the most in-demand actors and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on ‘Venom’ has been truly amazing.”

It’s no surprise that Sony Pictures would want to revisit the franchise, the original Zombieland opened at number-one at the box-office in 2009 after hosting a $24.7M domestic debut. The film then went on to make over $75M domestically and over $102M worldwide. The first film featured Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, and short appearances by Amber Heard and Bill Murray.
