Sony Pictures released a first-look trailer for “Goosebumps 2” this morning, teasing the studio’s big family-friendly Halloween release. The sequel is based on R.L. Stine’s series of books, which have sold over 400M copies over the years. Fans of the franchise can watch the trailer below, the comedy-adventure will hit theaters this October.
Ari Sandel directed the new installment, working from a screenplay written by Rob Lieber. The first “Goosebumps” film released back in 2015 and was directed by Rob Letterman, who did not return to direct the sequel. The film featured Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan, Jack Black and Kumail Nanjiani, and the installment opened at number-one domestically with a $23M debut weekend. The film then went on to make over $80M domestically and over $150M worldwide for the studio. “Goosebumps 2” will add Madison Iseman, Courtney Lauren Cummings, and Chris Parnell to the cast and is set to open on October 12th.
Sony Pictures is also releasing the Spider-Man spinoff “Venom” that month, that film was directed by Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Hardy in the titular role. “Goosebumps 2” will open against the bio-drama “First Man” with Ryan Gosling and the Drew Goddard film “Bad Times at the El Royal” with Dakota Johnson, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Jeff Bridges, and Nick Offerman.
The following week after “Goosebumps 2” hits theaters is the debut of “Halloween” with Jamie Lee Curtis, giving older audiences a thriller to enjoy during the Halloween season. The big competition for “Goosebumps 2” that week will be Warner Bros. Pictures’ actioner “Mowgli,” which is hitting theaters nationwide alongside “Serenity” with Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, and Diane Lane. October is always stuffed with thrillers and horror-films and this year will offer a nice mix of family-appropriate content and adult-oriented horror.
