‘How to Talk to Girls at Parties’ Goes Digital This Week
Enjoy a punk-rock love story with aliens
If you need something to watch this week, John Cameron Mitchell’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” is available on digital platforms. The film has teen love, aliens, punk rock, and a pretty great soundtrack. The YA sci-fi story also has an all-star cast including Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp, Nicole Kidman, Ruth Wilson, and Matt Lucas.
The film comes from Neil Gaiman (“American Gods,” “Coraline”) and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus) In the film Enn (Alex Sharp) is a shy suburban London teenager in 1977, sneaking out with his best friends to after-hours punk parties. One night they stumble upon a bizarre gathering of sexy teenagers who seem like they are from another planet. This is because they are from another planet, visiting Earth to complete a mysterious rite of passage. That doesn’t stop Enn from falling madly in love with Zan (Elle Fanning), a beautiful and rebellious alien teenager who, despite her allegiance to her strange colony, is fascinated by Enn.
Together the duo embark on a delirious adventure through the kinetic punk rock world of 1970s London, inadvertently setting off a series of events that will lead to the ultimate showdown of punks vs. aliens, and test the limits of how far each of them will go for true love. If you need some prodding, you can watch the new clip below, released for the digital launch of the film.
We can’t really judge this film in terms of how well it did in theaters because it only screened in about 100 of them. The film made about $55K, with an opening weekend haul of almost $13K. The limited release was for ten days back in May, and now you get to stream it on your favorite device.
