Disney released the first official “Solo: A Star Wars Story” trailer today, as the cast and crew attend the Cannes International Film Festival for the film’s screening at the Grand Amphitheatre Lumière.
As we reported earlier, the film is set to premiere at the annual event, but the Star Wars installment is being presented Out of Competition. The film was written by Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan, and directed by Ron Howard. Alongside Alden Ehrenreich (Blue Jasmine, 2013) who plays Han Solo, the cast includes Woody Harrelson (No Country For Old Men, 2007), Emilia Clarke (Terminator Genisys, 2015), Donald Glover (The Martian, 2015), Thandie Newton (Jefferson in Paris, 1995), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (The Iron Lady, 2011), Joonas Suotamo (Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi, 2017) and Paul Bettany (Dogville, 2003).
Solo : A Star Wars story is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, the President of LucasFilm, with Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel. The executive producers are Lawrence Kasdan, Jason McGatlin, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
If Solo wants to have the highest opening weekend in the Star Wars Spin-off world, the film will have to make over $155M on opening weekend. That’s the current record being held by “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the first standalone installment in the Star Wars franchise. That “Star Wars Story” went on to make over $1B worldwide.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” is the third film in the franchise to make a debut at the Cannes Film Festival. The previous films in attendance were the 2002 film “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones,” and the 2005 film “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”. The new installment stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, and Emilia Clarke. Also featured in the film are Woody Harrelson, and Jon Favreau. In the past, Disney has released a few TV Spots, teasers and clips from the film, but Star Wars fans can watch the first trailer for the film below.
Disney will release “Solo: A Star Wars Story” in theaters on May 25, 2018.
