Universal Pictures is kicking off the weekend with a first-look trailer for “The First Purge,” the upcoming installment to the popular Purge franchise, set to release this July.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 4th, and this marks the first official trailer for the film. The studio teases the installment stating, “Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.” The film will have to do very well on opening weekend, since Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” starring Evangeline Lilly and Paul Rudd, is set to debut just two-days later
You have probably figured out the plot of the film, but the story is about how the Purge came to be in America. In an effort to push the crime rate below 1% annually, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) tested a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. Things go wrong, and the trial-city soon spreads across the nation.
The previous film in the series was “The Purge: Election Year,” a film that debuted at number-three in theaters on opening weekend and grossed over $118M worldwide. The first film in the franchise made over $89M worldwide, and the follow-up sequel grossed over $111M in theaters.
In the new film, creator James DeMonaco (writer/director of The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year) returns alongside the producers. Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious series, Get Out, Split), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ouija series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers).
The First Purge is directed by Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands), working from a screenplay once again written by DeMonaco. You can look for Universal Pictures‘ “The First Purge” on July 4, 2018.
