Rowan Atkinson has another “Johnny English” installment on the way, and Universal Pictures released the first trailer for the film to get fans excited for the big debut. Called “Johnny English Strikes Again,” the comedy is expected to hit theaters later this fall.
This will be the third installment of the Johnny English comedy series, with Rowan Atkinson returning as the bumbling secret agent. The new adventure begins when a cyber-attack reveals the identity of all active undercover agents in Britain, leaving Johnny English as the secret service’s last hope. Called out of retirement, English dives head first into action with the mission to find the mastermind hacker. The studio teases the film adding, “As a man with few skills and analogue methods, Johnny English must overcome the challenges of modern technology to make this mission a success”.
Fans of the franchise can watch the first official trailer below. This new installment was directed David Kerr, the first film he has directed for the franchise. The original film was directed by Peter Howitt, and “Johnny English Reborn” was directed by Oliver Parker. The franchise has attracted big names in the past including John Malkovich, Natalie Imbruglia, Rosamund Pike, and Dominic West.
The films have been consistent money makers for Universal Pictures, even domestically. The first film in the series debuted back in 2003, making over $9.1M on opening weekend before grossing over $160M worldwide. The sequel launched in 2011, also grossing $160M worldwide.
If anything, the new Johnny English film will give moviegoers another genre to choose from when they hit movie theaters later this fall. Between September and October, the box-office will be filled with thrillers and horror projects, and it’s nice to see Universal Pictures breaking away from the Halloween-theme and offering up a slapstick comedy.
