This week was the big-release of “Ready Player One,” and the sci-fi adaptation dominated the box-office on opening weekend. Tyler Perry’s “Acrimony” opened this week as well, giving thriller fans an alternative to the sci-fi epic.
At the end of the traditional weekend, “Ready Player One” is expected to end with $41M domestically. The film opened across 4,234 locations, and could reach has high as $60M over the holiday weekend. “Ready Player One” was directed by Steven Spielberg, the film features Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, Mark Rylance, Ben Mendelsohn, TJ Miller, and Mckenna Grace.
“Tyler Perry’s Acrimony” did manage to debut in second-place overall on the domestic charts, bringing in $17M across 2,006 locations. “Acrimony” was written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film features Taraji P. Henson and Lyriq Bent.
Marvel’s “Black Panther” dropped down to third-place overall this weekend. The film grossed another $11M domestically, bringing the film’s seven-week total to just under $651M. “Black Panther” was written and directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.
“I Can Only Imagine” took the fourth-place spot on this week’s box-office charts. The religious drama brought in over $10M across 2,648 locations during the film’s third-week in theaters. “I Can Only Imagine” was directed by Andrew and Joe Erwin, the film stars J. Wrapping up the top-five this weekend was “Pacific Rim Uprising,” the film dropped to the bottom of the top-five list during its follow-up weekend. The Universal adventurer brought in $9M this weekend, raising the film’s two-week total to just over $45M. “Pacific Rim 2” was directed by Steven S. DeKnight, the film features John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day.
