The long-awaited “Tomb Raider” reboot hit theaters nationwide this weekend, battling the romantic comedy-drama “Love, Simon” in hopes to win the weekend. With the Disney duo “Black Panther” and “A Wrinkle in Time” still performing well in theaters, it’s not an easy weekend to be a new release, and it’s not going to get any easier next weekend. The thriller “Unsane” is set to open nationwide in just a week, along with the animated-comedy “Sherlock Gnomes” and the YA drama “Midnight Sun”. The big release that might tank Tomb Raider’s follow-up week is “Pacific Rim 2,” which is also set to open nationwide next weekend.
Even with a new Lara Croft film at the box-office, Marvel’s “Black Panther” won the domestic box-office for the fifth-week in a row. “Black Panther” brought in over $27M across 3,834 locations this weekend, raising the film five-week domestic total to just over $605M. “Black Panther” was written and directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ actioner “Tomb Raider” had a strong second-place showing, grossing $23M across 3,854 locations. “Tomb Raider” was directed by Roar Uthaug, the film stars Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, and Walton Goggins.
The film “I Can Only Imagine” landed in third-place overall on the domestic charts, bringing in $17M at just 1,629 locations. “I Can Only Imagine” was directed by Andrew and Joe Erwin, the film stars J. Michael Finley, Brody Rose, and Trace Adkins. That was enough to drop Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation to fourth-place overall after the film’s $16.5M weekend. The star-studded Disney adaptation has now grossed over $61M in just two-weeks. “A Wrinkle in Time” was directed by Ava DuVernay, the film features Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Levi Miller, Chris Pine, Zach Galifianakis, and Michael Peña.
FOX’s “Love, Simon” made $11.5M across 2,402 locations this weekend, which landed the film in the top-five overall. “Love, Simon” was directed by Greg Berlanti, the film stars Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, and Josh Duhamel.
As we mentioned earlier, there are several major releases to look for next weekend, including the thriller “Unsane” which was directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film stars Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharaoh, Juno Temple, and Amy Irving. That film will open against “Pacific Rim 2” starring John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day, as well as the animated-comedy “Sherlock Gnomes” featuring the voice talents of Johnny Depp, James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Stephen Merchant, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mary J. Blige. The release of “Midnight Sun” could split the box-office even further, that YA romantic-drama features Bella Thorne, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Rob Riggle. We should also mention that Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” will have a very limited opening next weekend, the new Anderson project features the voice talents of Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Liev Schreiber, Fisher Stevens, and Tilda Swinton.
