Older readers may remember the 1991 film “The Rocketeer” starring Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, and Alan Arkin, but a new generation will meet the fun-loving adventurer in a new animated-series heading to Disney Junior. This time around Kit will be a fun-loving female, who becomes the new Rocketeer and takes on a secret identity. Disney stopped short of announcing a premiere date for the new series, but we do have a release window.
The network confirmed this week that it has started production on the new animated adventure series, and that the show will focus on a younger demographic. The series is set to debut in 2019.
Just like the film, the new series will based on the comic-books by Dave Stevens. Disney stated that the story will follow Kit which the company describes as “a young girl who opens a surprise package on her birthday revealing her destiny as the next Rocketeer”.
If you are new to all of this, a Rocketeer is a superhero that flies around with a jet-pack, in this series she will help solve crimes and will keep people safe. Disney Junior stated that in the story, “Kit, under a secret identity, will take on her new responsibility to save the day—accompanied by her gadget-minded best friend, Tesh, and airplane mechanic uncle, Ambrose.”
Joe D’Ambrosia, senior vice president of Original Programming for Disney Junior, added, “We are very excited to introduce The Rocketeer to our young Disney Junior audience. The vast storytelling found in the original comic books provides the perfect opportunity to create an exciting new adventure series told from a young girl superhero perspective that the whole family can enjoy together.”
The original “The Rocketeer” was a financial success, but the film falls short when compared to other Disney films released at that time. “The Rocketeer” made over $46M in theaters, after a $9.6M opening weekend.
