Netflix’s Sabrina Series adds Miranda Otto as Zelda
Miranda Otto is getting her witch-on
Netflix has added another major character to the currently untitled “Sabrina” project. Miranda Otto (Homeland, The Lord of the Rings films) has been cast in the Netflix original series, which is based on the Archie Comics graphic novel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,
According to Netflix, Otto will star in the series-regular role as Zelda Spellman. In the series Zelda Spellman (Miranda Otto) is Sabrina’s sterner witch aunt (the other being Hilda, played by Lucy Davis). Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night. She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina (series star Kiernan Shipka), and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.
Netflix describes the series stating: “Untitled Sabrina Project imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
While the series still doesn’t have a name, the popular video-streaming service has confirmed a few details about the original drama. Netflix will offer 20 episodes in the first season, and they will follow the one-hour drama format. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is serving as Executive Producer and Writer on the series, which is being directed by Lee Toland Krieger. The executive producers on the show are Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter (Berlanti Productions), Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics), and Lee Toland Krieger.
In this new version Sabrina Spellman is half-human and half-witch, and she is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress. While a witch, Sabrina is also trying to be an average sophomore at Baxter High. In the previous announcement for the series Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said, “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
It was already announced that Kiernan Shipka will playing the role of Sabrina in the series.
