Sony Pictures hosted the L.A. premiere of “Annihilation” this week, and the cast and crew of the film met with fans and spoke about the upcoming thriller. The film has quite a cast behind it, including Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Tuva Novotny. The almost all-female cast was one of the reason so many high-profile stars decided to join the project, but of course working with such a popular thriller-director wasn’t a tough sell to begin with.

If you haven’t seen the trailers yet, the film follows Lena, a biologist and former soldier. Lena joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X, which is a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscape and creatures, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.

The film comes from writer and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later) and based on the acclaimed best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. “Ex Machina” was the film that propelled Alicia Vikander’s career, and the film made over $25M domestically and almost $37M worldwide. Tessa Thompson is coming off her recent work in “Thor: Ragnarok,” a Marvel franchise that Natalie Portman also starred in. Thompson is also expected to appear in “Avengers: Infinite War,” and is set to star in the film “Creed II” with Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan. The follow-up will be directed by Steven Caple Jr.

As for “Annihilation,” the thriller will hit theaters on February 23, 2018, which is already a crowded box-office. The big contender for that weekend will be “Marvel’s Black Panther,” which releases nationwide one-week earlier. The animated-comedy “Early Man” will also be in its second-weekend when “Annihilation” hits theaters, and the film is releasing against “Every Day” and the adult comedy “Game Night”.
