If you still haven’t jumped into the online team-based shooter “Overwatch,” this weekend is your chance to try out all of the new heroes and updates. Blizzard will be hosting an Overwatch Free Weekend on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this weekend, though PS4 users will still need a PlayStation subscription, and Xbox One users will still need an Xbox subscription to play online. As always, PC players will be just fine.
During this free weekend, Blizzard will be making Overwatch’s full roster of 26 heroes and 17 maps available for play in a variety of modes, including Quick Play, Custom Games, and the Arcade. Players will also have the ability to level up, earn loot boxes, and unlock several customization options over the course of the weekend. Those who decide to purchase Overwatch after test driving the game will get to keep any progress made during the weekend—as long as they use the same Blizzard, Sony Entertainment, or Xbox Live account that they played on.
It’s a pretty great weekend to play, since Blizzard is also hosting the ‘Year Of The Dog’ Lunar Event for players. That event is scheduled to run through March 5th, and players will be able to earn special Chinese New Year themed goodies through loot boxes. There’s also Blizzard World, the new hybrid Assault/Escort map set in an amusement park. The special map celebrates all things Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo, and will also be part of the free weekend.. Charge the gates of Stormwind, sneak through the Nexus Experience, and guide the payload through areas filled with high ground, flanking routes, and environmental hazards. Blizzard World is playable on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
For the soon-to-be new players out there, the action of Overwatch takes place in a technologically advanced, highly stylized future earth. In a time of global crisis, an international task force of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities known as Overwatch had come together to restore peace to a war-torn world. After many years, the group’s influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded. Now the teams are getting back together, and the world needs heroes once again.
