We may not be done with the stories of Rey, Poe, Finn, and the First Order yet, but Disney is already planning the next set of films within the Star Wars universe. This week Disney confirmed that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will write and produce the next set of Star Wars films for the studio, and fans on social media are loving it.

You may know the duo best as the creators of the Emmy Award-winning television series “Game of Thrones” on HBO. Since “Game of Thrones” will be ending with the next season, it’s nice to see the popular team working together again, and Star Wars fans should be pretty excited about the partnership. Over the last few years Star Wars has been digging into the Game of Thrones cast to fill its movies, with actors like Gwendoline Christie and Emilia Clarke both taking roles in a Galaxy far, far away.

Disney already confirmed that the new films will depart from the Skywalker saga, and that the new trilogy will be developed by Rian Johnson, who was the writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

Disney did not set a release date for the new films, and probably won’t for the next year, but more information on the new trilogy might come out of D23, or around Star Wars day on May the 4th.
