Universal gives The First Purge a Holiday Weekend Debut
But will there be fireworks for the First Purge?
Universal Pictures has set a premiere date for “The First Purge,” releasing the highly anticipated installment over July 4th weekend. Along with a premiere date, the studio released the image above, a Donald Trump inspired red hat with the words “The First Purge” written across it.
The studio teased the film adding “Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.” The studio also teased the plot of the new installment:
“To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.”
The new film will star Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei.
The original “The Purge” debuted to the number-one spot on the domestic charts back in 2013, and after a $34M debut weekend, the film went on to make over $64M domestically and over $89M worldwide. The sequel, called “The Purge: Anarchy,” opened the following year in the number-two spot with a $29M opening weekend. The film fell short of beating FOX’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” in its follow-up week, but “The Purge: Anarchy” did gross over $72M domestically and over $111M worldwide while it was in theaters. The last installment to hit theaters was “The Purge: Election Year,” which opened at number-three after bringing in $31M on opening weekend. Despite opening in third-place (behind “Finding Dory” and “Tarzan”) the film made over $79M domestically and $118M worldwide.
Coming off the most successful film in the series, The Purge: Election Year, creator James DeMonaco (writer/director of The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year) returns alongside the producers of this worldwide phenomenon: Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious series, Get Out, Split), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ouija series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers).
The First Purge is directed by Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands), working from a screenplay once again written by DeMonaco.
Universal Pictures will release The First Purge on July 4th, 2018.
