Toni Collette is Haunted by Family Secrets in “Hereditary” Trailer
This is a family tree better left alone
Ari Aster’s Sundance thriller “Hereditary” was a big hit at this year’s film festival, and now A24 has set a premiere date after releasing a first-look trailer for the film. “Hereditary” will be getting a nationwide release this June, putting the film against “Ocean’s 8” and Disney’s “Incredibles 2” at the box-office.
The story picks up when Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away. Afterwards her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Joining Toni Collette in the thriller are Gabriel Byrne, Ann Dowd, Milly Shapiro, and Alex Wolff.
The studio hyped the film by adding: “Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.”
Not only will “Ocean’s 8,” “Increadibles 2” and “Hereditary” be releasing this June, films like “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Adrift,” and “Sicario 2: Soldado” will also be releasing that same month. Since the boon of horror-hits like “Paranormal Activity,” and “Insidious,” the summer months have been a lucrative release window for the genre, and it’s nice to see Toni Collete adding some gravitas to the summer thriller series. Last year, expected hits like “The Mummy” flopped during the month of June, while “Wonder Woman,” “Despicable Me 3,” and “Cars 3” dominated the box-office. The thriller “47 Meters Down” saw relative success that month, despite the competition, and A24’s “It Comes At Night” did manage to gross almost $14M over the same release window. You can watch the first trailer for “Hereditary” below, the film is set to release in theaters on June 8, 2018.
