“The Disaster Artist” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this week to a standing ovation, and the trailer is just what you need to start your week. The film was part of TIFF’s Midnight Madness, and the cast came out to support the film and discuss the sometimes bizarre subject matter of ‘The Room’ and Tommy Wiseau.
The film is based on Greg Sestero’s best-selling tell-all about the making of Tommy’s cult-classic disasterpiece The Room (starting at $9 at Amazon). The studio teases the film stating, “The Disaster Artist is a hilarious and welcome reminder that there is more than one way to become a legend, and no limit to what you can achieve when you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing.”
Fans of the original, or of the popular cast bringing it back it life, can watch the official trailer below.
The film itself stars Dave Franco, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, Alison Brie, Jacki Weaver, and Josh Hutcherson. The project was directed by James Franco. “The Disaster Artist” will also feature, Kate Upton, Zoey Deutch, Zac Efron, Eliza Coupe, Sharon Stone, Randall Park, and Casey Wilson. In the cameos section, you can expect to find Zach Braff, Adam Scott, Bryan Cranston, Kristen Bell, Lizzy Caplan, and J.J. Abrams.
“The Room” has been a cult-hit for years, and still plays at least once a year in theaters across the country. If you want to watch it (it’s truly terrible to see on its own) I suggest watching the Rifftrax version (with the previous cast of MST3K) to get through it. Once you are done, you can listed to the “How Did This Get Made?” podcast for more insight on the film. The HDTGM episode features the author of the book (and former star of “The Room”) Greg Sestero as a special guest. The HDTGM cast (Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas) are also featured in “The Disaster Artist”. Tommy Wiseau is also expected to make an appearance in the film.
