The popular “Insidious” horror-franchise is returning to theaters this winter, and fans can get a first-look at the fourth installment thanks to a new movie trailer released today by Universal Pictures. The new film will be called “Insidious: The Last Key,” and will welcome back Lin Shaye as Dr. Elise Rainier the parapsychologist. This time around Dr. Rainier will be facing her own a personal haunting, this time with her own family.

The film was written by co-creator Leigh Whannell (Saw), who also wrote the trilogy and directed Chapter 3. Returning to produce the series are Insidious regulars Jason Blum (The Purge series, Get Out), Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and co-creator James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7). The film itself was directed by Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan), this is Robitel’s first installment in the series.

Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Charles Layton, Bailey Conway Anglewicz, Couper Samuelson and Whannell serve as executive producers. Fans of the franchise can watch the trailer below, thanks to an early release from the studio.

The original “Insidious” was a studio’s dream, a film made with just $1.5M that went on to gross over $97M worldwide. The second installment had a modest budget of $5M, and managed to beat the original with a $161M worldwide total. “Insidious 3” had the largest budget to date (with an estimated $10M) but the film failed to top the sequel and finished its worldwide theatrical run making almost $113M.

The original film released back in 2011, and was directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell. “Insidious” featured Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Barbara Hershey. The sequel brought back Wan and Whanell, as well as Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson to star in the film. Wan did not return to direct the third-installment, instead, the film was written and directed by Leigh Whannell. Dermot Mulroney was featured in the third film.

Universal will release “Insidious: The Last Key” in theaters on January 5, 2018.
