Box Office Results: Planet of the Apes topples Spider-Man with $56M

Over the weekend FOX’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” took on everyone’s favorite web-slinger’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” at the box-office. Moviegoers could also choose to see the horror-thriller “Wish Upon,” and the popular film “The Big Sick” expanded into more theaters this week to entice moviegoers. Depending on where you live, you may have had the option to see “Lady MacBeth” this weekend, the film opened across five locations domestically.

Taking the top-spot on the domestic charts this weekend was “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which had a $56M opening weekend. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, and Steve Zahn.

Spider-Man dropped down to second-place this weekend, but still brought in $45M while remaining in 4,348 locations. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” has now grossed over $208M since it debuted two-weeks ago. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” was directed by Jon Watts, the film stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zendaya, and Donald Glover.

“Despicable Me 3,” from Universal Pictures, grossed almost $19M this weekend, the animated-comedy has now grossed over $187M in three-weeks. “Despicable Me 3” was directed by Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin, the film features the voice talents of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Trey Parker.

The action-hit “Baby Driver” grossed another $8.7M this weekend, raising the film’s three-week total to just over $73M domestically. “Baby Driver” was directed by Edgar Wright, and the film stars Ansel Elgort, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, and Lily James.

“The Big Sick” managed to remain in the top-five this weekend, the hit film brought in $7.6M across 2,597 locations. The film now has a $16M domestic total after just four-weeks at the limited box-office.

Not making the top-five but worth mentioning were “Wish Upon” and “Lady Macbeth”. The horror-thriller “Wish Upon” only brought-in $5.5M across 2,250 locations. “Wish Upon” was directed by John R. Leonetti, the film features Joey King, Ryan Phillippe, and Ki Hong Lee. Despite its limited five-theater opening, “Lady Macbeth” grossed almost $69K this weekend. “Lady Macbeth” was directed by William Oldroyd, the film stars Florence Pugh, Cosmo Jarvis, and Paul Hilton.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” will have to battle the war-drama “Dunkirk,” the adult-comedy “Girls Trip,” and the sci-fi epic “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” next weekend.
