Just a few days after LucasFilm confirmed that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have left the untitled ‘Han Solo’ spinoff film that the duo had been working on for the past few months, the studio has named a new director. It has been confirmed that famed director Ron Howard will be stepping into the role of Director, which should have Star Wars fans pretty excited.

Lord and Miller departed the project earlier this month, citing “creative differences” as the reason for leaving.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm earlier this week. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller also released a statement at that time, adding, “Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew”.

LucasFilm confirmed Howard’s hiring stating, “Lucasfilm is pleased to announce that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard has been named director of the untitled Han Solo film.”

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

The new Han Solo film will star Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, and will feature Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke. It was also confirmed that Donald Glover will be taking the role of Lando Calrissian in the film. Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are also featured in the film, along with Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. The story was written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, and this film is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur, Simon Emanuel, and co-produced by Kiri Hart, Susan Towner, and Will Allegra. Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin will executive produce this new installment for Disney. Bradford Young will be the Director of Photography, Chris Dickens will be lead Editor, Dominic Tuohy is the SFX Supervisor, Rob Bredow the VFX Supervisor and Brad Allan will be the Action Designer. Neal Scanlan will once again handle the job of Creature & Droid FX Creative Supervisor, Neil Lamont is the Production Designer, Dave Crossman and Glyn Dillon are Co-Costume Designers, Jamie Wilkinson is the Prop Master, Lisa Tomblin will handle Hair, Amanda Knight is on Make-Up and Nina Gold is the official UK Casting Director.

As of right now, the Han Solo film remains scheduled for a May 2018 release.
