That tremor in the Force you felt this afternoon was Disney’s announcement for “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which will release in the spring of 2019. Unlike the previous installments, which were released in the winter months, the ninth film in the Skywalker family-history will hit theaters in the spring. The film will be directed by Colin Trevorrow, the same name behind the hit “Jurassic World,” and will stand as the final film in the new trilogy. Disney has not commented on creating another trilogy at this time, and has certainly refrained from hinting at who it will follow. We do know that Disney and Lucasfilm have plenty of Star Wars films planned though, and the companies currently plan to release a new one every year through 2020. The next film in the franchise to hit theaters will be “Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi,” that film will release in December 15, 2017. Disney released the first trailer for that film earlier this month.

Disney also announced a few new details on the next Indiana Jones film. Director Steven Spielberg and leading-man Harrison Ford will reunite for the fifth film (fourth if you’re a true fan of the franchise) and it is now scheduled to release in July 2020. This will be the fifth time that Spielberg and Ford have reunited for the franchise, which along with Star Wars, helped to put Ford on the map. The 2020 release-date should give our culture enough time to forget everything we saw in “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”.

On the animation and CGI side of Disney, “Frozen 2” will release on November 27, 2019, and the new live-action adaptation of “The Lion King” will release on July 19, 2019. The animated film “Gigantic,” which will be a musical based on the popular Jack and the Beanstalk tale, was pushed to November 2020. The film was originally set to release next year around the holidays.

“Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” was also moved this afternoon, jumping from March 2018 to November of the same year. The highly-anticipated Ava DuVernay adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time,” based on the book of the same name, will release on March 9, 2018. The film stars Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Rowan Blanchard and Zach Galifianakis. The film was scheduled to launch on April 6, 2018.

Last but not least is “Toy Story 4,” now scheduled for June 2019, and “Marvel’s Captain Marvel” on March 8, 2018.
