Rooney Mara is haunted by Casey Affleck in ‘A Ghost Story’ trailer

One sad specter

A24 released a trailer for “A Ghost Story” today, an upcoming fantasy romance-drama starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. The film was written and directed by David Lowery, and will release in theaters this summer. Affleck is coming off his award-winning role in “Manchester by the Sea,” while Mara is following-up her roles in “Lion” and “Song to Song”. The film also features moments with Kesha, Liz Franke and Brea Grant. A24 has been a powerhouse of award-winning talent over the last few years, and fans of the studio can watch the trailer below.

David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon) directed the film, which A24 describes as a “singular exploration of legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection”. In the film Casey Affleck plays the role of a recently deceased ghost, wearing a cartoonish white-sheet. After his death, Affleck returns home to find his grieving wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara) but things are not the same. Unfortunately for Affleck’s spectral character, he is trapped, and can only watch as the life he once lived slowly fades away, and his wife slowly forgets him. The studio went on to describe the film stating, “Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence”. A24 added, “An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A Ghost Story emerges ecstatic and surreal—a wholly-unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.”

Along with a string of awards, Affleck’s “Manchester by the Sea” performance grossed over $62M for Roadside Attractions. Mara’s “Lion” brought in over $126M globally, and both were hailed by critics and fans in 2016. Mara is also set to play the title role in “Mary Magdalene,” a film directed by Garth Davis and featuring Ariane Labed and Joaquin Phoenix. Casey Affleck is expected to take on the role of Meriwether Lewis in a “Lewis and Clark” TV Mini-Series. Fans of the actors can expect those projects to release over the next two years.

“A Ghost Story” is set to release on July 7, 2017.
