Three new films will hit the nationwide box-office this weekend, but Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” won’t be an easy film to top. The movies hitting your local cinema this weekend are the comedy-adaptation “CHIPs,” the thriller “Life,” and the “Power Rangers” reboot. Two film are releasing across the limited box-office as well, and one film is expanding into more theaters.
“The Power Rangers” reboot has the best chance of the three new-releases to walk away on top, considering its PG-13 rating and broad brand-appeal. “The Power Rangers” was directed by Dean Israelite, working off a screenplay written by John Gatin, starring in the film are Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G. and Ludi Lin.”The Power Rangers” will serve as the origin-story for the Power Rangers, with the studio hoping to jumpstart the franchise. The film also features Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston and Bill Hader. You can watch a trailer for the film to decide for yourself if the adaptation is worth the ticket-price.
Older readers might remember “CHIPs” from the original TV series starring Erik Estrada, Larry Wilcox and Robert Pine. The new film is only loosely based on the original series, and stars Michael Peña, Dax Shepard and Jessica McNamee. The new adaptation was written and directed by Dax Shepard, and will most likely bare little resemblance to the original series. You can watch a trailer for “CHIPs” on the studio’s YouTube channel. You might remember that Warner Bros. Pictures tried this format before, casting Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller in a “Starsky & Hutch” adaptation. That film did offer a more prominent comedy duo, the two stars were coming off “Zoolander” at the time, and the film grossed over $170M worldwide in 2004.
Sony’s “Life” offers the biggest stars, though it’s R-rating might prevent the film from taking the top-spot this weekend. The thriller stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds. “Life” follows a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station that discover a rapidly evolving life form that puts them in danger. The film was directed by Daniel Espinosa, the script was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. You can watch a trailer for “Life”.
At the limited box-office you will find “Wilson” and “Phillauri,” with last week’s “Slamma Jamma” expanding into more theaters. “Wilson” is a comedy from Craig Johnson, starring Woody Harrelson, Sandy Oian and Shaun Brown. The film follows a neurotic middle-aged man as he reunites with his estranged wife and meets his teenage daughter for the first time. You can watch a trailer for “Wilson” on YouTube.
“Phillauri” is a fantasy-comedy about a man that must a tree, and is only opening in 65 locations this week. The film stars Anushka Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh and Suraj Sharma. A trailer for the film is available on YouTube as well.
It will be surprising if any of the these film topple “Beauty and the Beast,” despite the film repeating in theaters for a second week. Disney’s live-action adaptation has already grossed over $260M domestically as of March 21 and over $428M globally.
