Universal Pictures has set a home box-office release date for “The Great Wall,” the action-adventurer will release on Digital HD on May 9, 2017 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and On Demand on May 23, 2017. The film stars Matt Damon (Bourne franchise, The Martian), and the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray will offer unique behind-the-scenes bonus features and both deleted and extended scenes. Directing Matt Damon in the film was Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), the screenplay was written by Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro. “The Great Wall” tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. When a mercenary warrior (Damon) is imprisoned within the Great Wall, he discovers the mystery behind one of the greatest wonders of the world. As wave after wave of marauding beasts besiege the massive structure, his quest for fortune turns into a journey toward heroism as he joins a huge army of elite warriors to confront the unimaginable and seemingly unstoppable force.
Joining Damon in the film are Jing Tian (Kong: Skull Island, Special ID), Pedro Pascal (“Game of Thrones,” “Narcos”), Andy Lau (Internal Affairs, House of Flying Daggers) and Willem Dafoe (The English Patient, John Wick).
The film did not debut at number-one, despite offering both Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal. The film opened at number-three behind “The LEGO Batman Movie” and “Fifty Shades Darker,” both of which were in their second-week at the box-office. “The Great Wall” did gross $44.8M at the domestic box-office, and went on to make over $329.7M worldwide. Damon is expected to star in “Suburbicon” with Matt Damon, Oscar Isaac and Josh Brolin. The film was directed by long-time Damon co-star George Clooney, who also write the script with Ethan Coen. That film does not have a release-date at this time.
