Studio Ghibli’s “Ocean Waves” hits Blu-Ray in March
Based on Saeko Himuro's best-selling novel
Studio Ghibli has quite a collection of award-winning animated films. The studio has created “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” and “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya,” and now Universal has set a home box-office release date for the remastered classic “Ocean Waves”. Fan will have to wait another month before the official-release, but the film is available for pre-order through authorized retailers like Amazon.com.
“Ocean Waves” will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on April 18, 2017 through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, in partnership with GKIDS. Rarely seen outside Japan, this Ghibli classic will be available to own for the first time in North America.
“Ocean Waves” takes a nostalgic look at the complexities of friendship and young love. The studio explains the story stating, “In the film Taku and his best friend Yutaka are headed back to school, for what looks like another uneventful year. They soon find their friendship tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo whose attitude shifts wildly from flirty and flippant to melancholic.” The studio adds, “When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships.”
“Ocean Waves” is an animated adaptation of Saeko Himuro’s best-selling novel, the screenplay adaptation was written by Keiko Niwa. Also included in the release is the short film The Ghiblies Episode 2, a another collection not available to own in North America until now. The original release was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki, and features the voice-talents of Nobuo Tobita, Toshihiko Seki and Yoko Sakamoto.
Of Studio Ghibli’s many releases, “Spirited Away” was one of the most successful here in North America. The film, distributed by Disney’s Buena Vista, grossed over $10M domestically, the film went on to make over $274M worldwide.
