Angela Lansbury joins Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins’ sequel
Not her first time in a Disney film of course
Earlier this week we reported that production had begun for Disney’s new “Mary Poppins” film. This week the studio confirmed that long-time Disney favorite, Angela Lansbury, will also be featured in the sequel.
The film itself will be a new story, a follow-up to the 1964 Disney classic. Angela Lansbury will join Emily Blunt, who is playing the role of Mary Poppins, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Miranda will be taking on the role of a simple lamplighter named Jack, though we expect a lot of singing and dancing from this particular lamplighter. Disney confirmed that Angela Lansbury will be playing the role of the Balloon Lady, an iconic character from the original P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins books.
Angela Lansbury had won five Tony Award in the past, and she has three Academy Award nominations. Lansbury was also given an honorary award for her long-standing brilliance in film. Disney fans might know her best as the voice of Mrs. Potts, from the animated-feature “Beauty and the Beast”. Older readers might remember her from the classic film “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” and of course “Murder She Wrote”.
The new Mary Poppins film will follow Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer), who are now grown up. Michael is living with his three children (Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson) and housekeeper Ellen (Julie Walters), in the house on Cherry Tree Lane. After a personal loss, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) comes back into the lives of the Banks family. She is joined by a street lamplighter named Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), and an eccentric cousin named Topsy (Meryl Streep).
Dick Van Dyke will also be returning to the cast, in the role of Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. Actor Colin Firth will be playing William Weatherall Wilkins.
Disney will release “Mary Poppins Returns” on December 25, 2018.
