The hit TBS late-night series “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” has announced plans to host the network’s first annual “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” which will take place on Saturday, April 29 at The Willard Hotel in Washington. The event is scheduled to directly combat the official White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which will be going on at the exact same time, in the same city.
Samantha Bee will host the event, “welcoming journalists and non-irritating celebrities from around the world,” according to the network. TBS added, “We suspect some members of the press may find themselves unexpectedly free that night, and we want to feed them and give them hugs.” President Donald Trump has been labeling news outlets, like CNN, as fake-news and restricting access and questions. The Correspondents’ dinner was designed to highlight how well the White House works with the national press, by offering transparency and access on behalf of the American public whenever it could. Since President Trump has taken office, that transparency and partnership has been called into question multiple times.
“Executives at TBS offered their full support of the gala by nodding politely and then muttering under their breath as we turned around,” said Bee. “The evening is sure to bring plenty of surprises, music, food, and laughter—and if you’re not careful you just might learn something. Specifically, you’ll learn how screwed we’d be without a free press.”
The “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” event will go live at the exact same time as the official White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which the network states is an, “incredible coincidence”. It should also be noted that all proceeds for “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” will go to the Committee to Protect Journalists (cpj.org).
This year “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” has grown its audience of adults 18-49, with Q4 2016 Live + 7 figures showing a +35% lift over Q1 2016 and initial 2017 numbers showing an +80% increase. Full Frontal with Samantha Bee airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on TBS. The series is executive-produced by Samantha Bee, Jason Jones, Jo Miller, Miles Kahn and Tony Hernandez.
