Things are not bright and sunny at Riverdale. The CW offered a quick-glimpse of the upcoming adaptation of the popular comic-strip today, showing off the dark storyline that awaits these classic characters.

The show is set to premiere on the network in just a few short weeks, with a premiere date set for January 26 at 9pm. The show will begin with a new school year, with the town of Riverdale still in mourning following the tragic death of high-school student Jason Blossom.

The network describes Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) as the “all-American teen,” but after the summer’s tragic events, the once career focused student wants to pursue a career in music. This is sure to clash with his father’s strict and conservative expectations. With no one to guide Archie through these tough decisions, Archie’s musical dreams could lead to conflict with his friend Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who as we know, will be the lead singer of the world famous Josie and the Pussycats. It seems that the only person Archie can rely on is his fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), but his relationship with Jughead has been distant since the tragedy of Jason’s death.

Of course there is always Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), the girl next-store with a huge crush on our protagonist. The network did mention that young Betty is “not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him,” so fans will have to wait and see what happens there. Betty is usually a nervous wreck, made worse by her smothering-mother Alice (Mädchen Amick). Her relationship with Archie is made even harder when new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols). Sparks will fly with Veronica and Archie, but Veronica will have to handle the situation carefully if she doesn’t want to upset her new BFF at Riverdale- nervous Betty.

Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) is at the top of the social-ladder at Riverdale, and loves to cause problems with Archie, Betty and Veronica, but all of these characters will wrangle with the mysterious death of Cheryl’s twin brother in the new series.
