Forest Whitaker will be bringing his talents to “Star Wars: Rebels” this season, the actor will be reprising his role as the Rebel freedom fighter Saw Gerrera. Whitaker recently played the same role in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and will lend his voice to the character in the popular animated series starting next year.
“Star Wars Rebels” is set in a time period just prior to the events of “Rogue One,” Whitaker’s character will first appear in “Star Wars Rebels: Ghosts of Geonosis, Parts One and Two” which is set to premiere on January 7 on Disney XD.
“It’s an incredible honor to have Forest Whitaker play Saw in ‘Rebels,’” says series executive producer Dave Filoni. “Forest did a great job at capturing Saw in a way that is a bit mad, a bit crazed, a bit afraid, but also a bit sympathetic. He sees something coming, but no one will take action before it’s too late.”
The character of Saw Gerrera was first introduced in the TV series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (2008-2015) as a guerrilla fighter for his home planet. Created by George Lucas, Saw received training from the Jedi – Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano – and served as an early harbinger of the Rebel Alliance, an assortment of disparate groups coming together to fight for a common cause.
The recent storyline in “Star Wars: Rebels” has been building to a possible connection with Obi-Wan Kenobi. This season has followed Darth Maul and Ezra, who seem to be chasing down the same goal, as they get closer to finding out Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hiding spot on Tatooine.
The show itself has been a great success for Disney XD, the series is set between the events of Star Wars Episodes III and IV. The story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Galactic Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. The series follows young Padawan Ezra, and the crew of the Ghost, on adventures fighting the Empire. The Ghost crew includes Jedi Kanan, Rebel pilot Hera, Zeb, Sabine, and the lovable astromech droid Chopper.
