FOX released the first official trailer for “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which is set to hit theaters next summer. The action-drama was directed by Matt Reeves, working off a script that he co-wrote with Mark Bomback.

Andy Serkis will once again bring his motion-capture talents to the franchise, he will be joined by Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller, Karin Konoval and Terry Notary. While FOX has released quite a few teaser-stills and movie-posters for the film, this marks the first official-trailer for the project.

In “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which will be the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel.

After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet. The franchise has been a consistent hit for the studio. The original film in the triology “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” grossed over $481M in theaters back in 2011, with the follow up film “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” grossing over $710M for the studio in 2014.

The first film in this trilogy, not including the Tim Burton film in 2001, was directed by Rupert Wyatt and featured James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto. The second installment was directed by Matt Reeves, and featured Gary Oldman and Keri Russell.

Fans of the franchise can catch the film when it hits theaters on July 14, 2017.
