A major character was cast today for the upcoming young Han Solo Star Wars spin-off, and Starwars.com made it official.
Earlier today Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Donald Glover will be playing a young Lando Calrissian in the new installment, a role that was originally played by Billy Dee Williams. The film, which is still untitled at this point, will release in 2018.
Directing the new film will be Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It was announced earlier this year that Alden Ehrenreich will be playing the role of Han Solo, which of course was played in the original trilogy and the last installment by Harrison Ford.
If you need a reminder, Lando Calrissian was an old ‘friend’ of Han Solo’s that the original crew met with on Cloud City. An important story-point to point out is that the iconic Millennium Falcon once belonged to Lando, who lost it to Han Solo at some point.
The announcement stated, “This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.”
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Most fans met Glover as Troy in the hit comedy ‘Community,’ and since then the actor has accomplished quite a lot. Glover created, and currently stars in, the critically acclaimed FX series Atlanta , and he has a Grammy-nominated album. That album is called ‘Because the Internet’ and it was released under the name Childish Gambino.
