IMAX releases are steadily becoming more commonplace as the popular theater option expands to more areas. This week the IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox, a division of 21st Century Fox, jointly announced the companies have signed a new multi-picture agreement including four key future tentpoles from the Fox slate.
The new deal includes ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’, a new ‘Predator,’ ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ and the studio’s untitled Marvel film. All of these films will be digitally re-mastered into the IMAX format and released in IMA® theaters worldwide.
“After sharing success with such recent box-office hits as the global phenomenon Deadpool, we are thrilled to sweeten the existing deal with our friends and partners at Twentieth Century Fox by providing IMAX fans worldwide a selection of the studio’s most exciting upcoming blockbusters,” said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. “With this agreement, we look forward to expanding our partnership with Fox and together offer fans around the world IMAX’s one-of-a-kind movie-going experience.”
‘The Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ will be directed by Wes Ball, working off a screenplay written by T.S. Nowlin. The films are based on the popular novels written by James Dashner. The film will star Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Giancarlo Esposito. FOX has set a release date for early January 2018. As for the new ‘Predatory,’ details are slim at this point. Shane Black is set to direct, if everything goes according to plan, he will write the screenplay with Fred Dekker. As of right now, Benicio Del Toro is attached to star in the film. Robert Rodriguez will direct the sci-fi action-thriller ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ for the studio. James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis are going to write the screenplay for the project. Starring in the film are Christoph Waltz, Ed Skrein, and Rosa Salazar.
