This week the drama “The Light Between Oceans” and the horror-thriller “Morgan” hit the box-office, but neither film found much success. While horror-thrillers have done amazing well this summer, “Morgan” had to compete with last week’s chart-topper “Don’t Breathe” from Warner Bros. Pictures. Not only are there a few big-titles still lingering on the top-five list from the summer, next week will introduce several major releases for these flops to compete with.
Despite a new thriller hitting the market, “Don’t Breathe” won its second weekend in a row with a $15.7M gross. The film remained in 3,051 locations this week and has grossed over $51.12M in just two-weeks. “Don’t Breathe” was directed by Fede Alvarez, working off a script co-written by Rodo Sayagues. The film stars Stephen Lang, Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette.
Despite being in theaters for five-weeks now, “Suicide Squad” from Warner Bros. managed to pull-in another $10M to take the second-spot on the domestic charts. The film remained in 3,292 locations this week and has grossed over $297.42M domestically for the studio. “Suicide Squad” was written and directed by David Ayer, among the many stars of the film are Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Cara Delevingne.
“Disney’s Pete’s Dragon” managed to take third-place this week, picking up $6.47M across 3,272 locations. The film had an amazing jump on the charts, rising from sixth-place last week, soaring up three spots on the holiday weekend. The animated-film has now grossed $64.22M in four-weeks, not the best that Disney has seen but still rather successful. “Pete’s Dragon” was directed by David Lowery, he also wrote the screenplay with Toby Halbrooks. The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford and Oakes Fegley.
Fourth-place went to another animated-feature, “Kubo and the Two Strings” from Focus Features. The popular summer release picked up $6.47M across 2,985 locations this week. The film has now grossed over $34.32M in just three-weeks. “Kubo and the Two Strings” was directed by Travis Knight, working off a screenplay written by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler. The film features the voice-talents of Charlize Theron, Art Parkinson and Matthew McConaughey.
Rounding out the top-five is, you guessed it, another animated-comedy. The adult-comedy “Sausage Party” from Sony Pictures cooked up another $5.3M across 2,766 locations to raise the film’s running total to $88.44M in just four-weeks.
That means that both of the new releases didn’t make the top-five on their debut weekends, but “The Light Between Oceans” did managed to take sixth-place overall with $4.98M. “The Light Between Oceans” was directed by Derek Cianfrance, the film is based on the popular novel written by M.L. Stedman. The drama stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz.
The thriller “Morgan” did much worse, only managing to hit $1.96M across 2,020 locations to take seventeenth-place on its big debut weekend. “Morgan” was directed by Luke Scott, working off a script written by Seth W. Owen. The film stars Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy and Rose Leslie of Game of Thrones fame.
These new releases will have a lot of competition as the fall-weather brings with it a few highly-anticipated films. Coming up next week are “The Disappointments Room,” Tom Hank’s big release “Sully,” the thriller “When the Bough Breaks” and “The Wild Life”.
