Suicide Squad beats August opening record in IMAX 3D

If you saw “Suicide Squad” at your local IMAX, odds are it was with a packed house. The DC Comic adaption set a record with the IMAX Corporation, which announced that the Warner Bros. Pictures’ film opened with a record-setting $18.2 million on 636 IMAX screens globally. That makes it the largest IMAX debut in August on both an international and global scale.

The previous record holder was “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which opened with $15.9 million worldwide. Domestically, Suicide Squad grossed $11 million on 382 IMAX screens, with $7.2 million from 254 international IMAX sites (without the benefit of China). The Box-Office results from the weekend show that “Suicide Squad” opened to roughly $135M. It should be stated that as more IMAX 3D theaters are built, the numbers are expected to rise on their own. We are sure “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will give the Suicide Squad a good run for their money when it launches.

Domestically, Suicide Squad kicked off the weekend with $2.4 million from IMAX pre-shows on Thursday, setting a new record for August and surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy as the previous record holder (with $1.9 million). Overall, IMAX accounted for 15 of Suicide Squad’s top 20 opening theatres.

International IMAX weekend results for Suicide Squad were led by such notable markets as Sweden (with $96,000 per screen), Puerto Rico ($67,000 per screen), South Korea ($59,000 per screen), Dubai ($57,000), the Netherlands ($56,000 per screen) and Australia ($53,000 per screen). Major overseas markets yet to open include Denmark, Turkey, Egypt, Argentina, Germany, Austria, Italy, and in early September, Japan.

“Suicide Squad is resonating with IMAX fans worldwide in a huge way, which has pushed it to record-setting results,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment.

“We congratulate our longtime friends and partners at Warner Bros. and DC Comics, along with writer/director David Ayer, for creating a raucously entertaining movie-going experience. Fanboys are at the heart of both The IMAX Experience and the growing DC features universe, and together we look forward to continuing the tradition of offering fans compelling characters and stunning visuals as seen in the best possible format—in IMAX.”
