When Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters last year, the question on everyone’s mind was the identity of Rey’s parents. There have been countless names added to the list of possibilities, the most popular option is that she related to wise old Obi-Wan Kenobi. Other leading theories include that Rey might be related to Luke Skywalker himself, but just like with Obi-Wan, it seems unlikely that Luke or Ben would break the Jedi code and have children of their own.
A new fan theory is a bit more believable, and there is mounting evidence that it may be true. Nestled deep within the links of Reddit, a user theorized that Rey is directly related to Emperor Palpatine, and the connections make a lot of sense when you look back at Star Wars TFA.
Drawing from the latest film, the video below shows you how Abrams might have been teasing the reveal with direct connections between Rey’s fighting style and that of the Emperor’s. Other clues involve the mysterious force visions Rey had when finding Luke’s lightsaber in the latest film, and even Rey’s accent plays a role in the theory.
The video does an excellent job at explaining the new theory, raking up over 470k views since May. While the theory itself isn’t exactly brand-new, nor is the video, it only recently started attracting attention. You can checkout the video in its entirety below.
Rey was an instant hit with fans when Star Wars TFA hit theaters, and the actor that plays Rey (Daisy Ridley) has won over just as many hearts with her social-media shares and appearances since the release. Fans will just have to wait until Episode 8, or even possible 9, before the true answer to Rey’s parents is revealed.
