Box Office Results: X-Men Apocalypse tops holiday with $65M

It’s Memorial Day weekend, the beginning of BBQs, beach trips and summer blockbusters. This also marks the first summer movie-battle of 2016, with Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland 2” and FOX’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” squaring off over the holiday weekend.

Winning the holiday weekend this year was “X-Men: Apocalypse,” the latest installment to the long-running franchise brought in $65M domestically across 4,150 locations. X-MEN Apocalypse was directed by Bryan Singer, working off a screenplay written by Simon Kinberg. Starring in the film are James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne,Sophie Turner and Olivia Munn.

In a distant second was the long-awaited Alice in Wonderland follow-up with $28.1M across 3,763 locations. Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” was directed by James Bobin. The screenplay was written by Linda Woolverton and based on the classic works of Lewis Carroll. The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Dropping from first to third this week was Sony’s “The Angry Birds Movie” with $18.7M. The animated comedy remained in 3,932 locations. The film has now earned $66.35M over two-weeks. “The Angry Bird Movie” was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, with Jon Vitti writing the script. The film features the voice talents of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride.

In fourth-place over all was Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War,” the film earned an additional $15.1M across 3,395 locations. The film has now earned over $372.6M domestically, not bad considering it has only been in theaters for four-weeks. “Captain America Civil War” was directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, working of a screenplay written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Rudd.

Wrapping up the top-five this weekend was the adult-comedy “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” from Universal Studios. The film earned $9.1M this weekend, while remaining at 3,416 locations across the country. The film has earned $38.3M since it premiered two-weeks ago. “Neighbors 2” was directed by Nicholas Stoller, working off a script written by Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. The film stars Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron and Chloe Moretz

Next weekend has quite a few major releases for fans to consider. The drama “Me Before You,” the comedy “Popstar” and the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” film will all make their debut next week.
