This week “The Angry Birds Movie,” “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” and “The Nice Guys” released in theaters. All three films shared a lofty goal this week, releasing Disney’s summer stranglehold at the box-office. Here are this week’s box office results.
The Disney-Marvel machine has been dominating the summer charts for the past few weeks. Hits like “Zootopia,” “Captain America” and “The Jungle Book” all remained in the top-ten last week on the domestic box-office charts.
This week’s three new releases will have to make quick-work of their debut weekend, Disney and FOX will be releasing their new blockbusters next week and will most likely shakeup the rankings.
Number-one this week went to Sony’s “The Angry Bird Movie” with a $39M debut, this despite some harsh reviews from critics. The animated comedy opened across 3,932 locations to reach number-one this weekend. “The Angry Bird Movie” was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, with Jon Vitti writing the script. The film features the voice talents of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride.
Dropping from first to third this weekend was Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War,” with $33.1M. The film, now in its third-week in theaters, has pulled-in over $347M domestically since its bug premiere. “Captain America Civil War” was directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, working of a screenplay written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Rudd.
Universal’s “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” earned $21.8M over its debut weekend, that was enough to win third-place overall. The adult-comedy opened across 3,384 locations domestically. “Neighbors 2” was directed by Nicholas Stoller, working off a script written by Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. The film stars Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron and Chloe Moretz.
“The Nice Guys” from Warner Bros. Pictures earned $11.3M across 2,865 locations to finish at number-four on the domestic charts. “The Nice Guys” was directed by Shane Black, who co-wrote the script with Anthony Bagarozzi. The film stars Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling and Angourie Rice.
Wrapping-up the top-five this weekend was Disney’s “Jungle Book” CGI and live-action hybrid. The Disney hit earned $11M this weekend while remaining in 3,460 locations. The film has now earned just over $327M for the studio in its six-weeks in theaters. “The Jungle Book” was directed by Jon Favreau, working off a script written by Justin Marks. The film is based on the original works of Rudyard Kipling. Neel Sethi stars in the film; while Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Lupita Wyong’o, Idris Elba and Scarlett Johansson lend their voices to the CGI cast.
Next week only has two major releases scheduled, but they are highly anticipated summer films. Disney will release its long awaited follow-up “Alice in Wonderland 2” in roughly 3,700 locations. That film will debut against FOX’s “X-Men: Apocalypse,” set to open in about 4,000 locations.
