If there are two women that almost everyone can agree are having an outstanding 2016, it’s Daisy Ridley and Beyonce.
Ridley is AskMen’s Woman of 2016, as decided by over half a million voters internationally. Rounding up the top 5 are Beyoncé, model Ashley Graham, actor and recording artist Priyanka Chopra and former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm.
This year’s Crush List marks the 15th anniversary of the Top 99 Women franchise, which celebrates “the women who are defining the world we live in,” according to the publication.
“The Crush List is a collection of 99 incredible women — stars, pro athletes, influencers, and geniuses — who absolutely crush it, no matter what they do. Our readers admire them and our editors simply can’t stop thinking about them,” explains Emma McKay, Editor-in-Chief
“After we launched the voting phase in March, frenzied fans from across the world voted so many times they actually crashed the site,” adds McKay. Over half a million votes were cast internationally. The voting link was shared over 20.6K times on social media.
McKay added, “Maybe it’s because she was cast [in Star Wars: The Force Awakens] as an unknown, but one thing that really makes Ridley stand out is the fact that she lacks the usual Hollywood façade. What we see in Ridley are all the things that made Rey’s character so popular — she’s a candid, sincere, brave, and unapologetically positive young woman.”
Ridley joins the ranks of several impressive and influential women who led previous Top 99 Women lists, including Emma Watson (2015), Emilia Clarke (2014), and Jennifer Lawrence (2013). The first Top 99 Women feature was launched in 2001.
