While fans of the television series “Game of Thrones” have been enjoying all of the new content released by HBO this year, fans of the books have been patiently awaiting the release of The Winds of Winter.
That is the next book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, which of course is the basis for the Games of Thrones series on television. Luckily for book lovers, George R.R. Martin had a very special surprise to handout this morning.
Martin published a new chapter of The Winds of Winter, and while the long-awaited sixth installment still does not have an exact release date, you can at least get a teaser for it.
The popular fantasy author posted the excerpt on his blog, which is written in from the first-perspective standpoint of the daughter of Dornish Prince Doran. Named Arianne Martell, the excerpt might have been chosen because that specific character hasn’t appeared on the television series. Of course that could change at any time, since Dorn has become a popular location and integral part of the television series.
You can read the short passage, which takes place as the princess journeys across the lands seeking out a man that is calling himself Aegon Targaryen. That character is presumed-dead at this point, he was (would be) the son of Elia Martell.
“You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in Winds of Winter? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste,” Martin wrote in a blog post. “For the rest, you will need to wait.”
Now with that chapter out of the way, fans probably have another long stretch of waiting ahead of them, but at least there is the show to hold you over until then.
