Alden Ehrenreich to play young Han Solo in Star Wars standalone film
It was one of the most coveted roles in all the galaxy, and Alden Ehrenreich reigns supreme. After months of negotiations and auditions, Disney and Lucasfilm have settled on a young nerfherder to play Han Solo in a new standalone film.
Alden Ehrenreich will be the new Han Solo when Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Star Wars film releases in a few years. Variety was one of the first publications to report that Alden Ehrenreich was in final negotiations for the role, Disney has yet to make a formal announcement at this time.
At just 26, Ehrenreich already has a few notable roles under his belt. Recently, the young star took on the role of Hobie Doyle in “Hail, Caesar!” alongside such stars as George Clooney and Scarlett Johansson.
So far Disney has been quiet about the details of the film, focusing its attention on promoting “Rogue One” which is due in theaters later this year.
Going by Han Solo’s age in the film, the standalone piece would have to take place before “Star War Episode V: A New Hope,” and fans and critics alike expect that Chewbacca will also be featured in the feature.
The original Han Solo role turned Harrison Ford into a household name, and Ehrenreich has a head start in his acting career to take on the iconic smuggler.
As for “Rogue One,” the first spinoff film that Disney has planned. That too will take place before the events of the original three installments. That film was directed by Gareth Edwards.
In “Rogue One” a group of rebels steal the plans for the Death Star from the Empire. The plans were used by the Rebel Alliance to destroy the base in Episode V. John Knoll wrote the story to the film, which is based on the original characters created by George Lucas. Starring in that film are Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Diego Luna.
