Box Office Results: “Gods of Egypt” fails while “Deadpool” soars

Two major releases hit domestic theaters this weekend, but neither of them was enough to stop the regenerative powers of “Deadpool” at the box-office. “Eddie the Eagle” from FOX studios and “Gods of Egypt” from Lionsgate released this week to a sluggish box-office, with “Gods of Egypt” stumbling right out of the gate.

In first-place on the domestic charts was “Deadpool” from FOX with $31.5M. The action-comedy remained in 3,856 theaters over the weekend, now reaching $286M in just three-weeks domestically. “Deadpool” was directed by Tim Miller with character writers Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza attached to the project. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin and T.J. Miller.

Second-place went to “God’s of Egypt” with a disappointing $14M over the film’s weekend debut. The film opened across 3,117 locations. “Gods of Egypt” was directed by Alex Proyas, working off a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The film stars Brenton Thwaites, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gerard Butler.

The film’s poor reception at the box-office most likely comes from the bad press the film has generated since the first trailer was released earlier this year. TV personalities, like John Oliver of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” bashed the show’s whitewashing of Egyptian culture by casting an almost exclusively white-cast. Coupled with the film’s release over Oscar weekend, which is suffering from it’s own #OscarSoWhite backlash, the film’s debut is a marriage between terrible choices and terrible timing.

“Kung Fu Panda 3,” also from FOX took third-place overall with $9M across 3,296 theaters. The film has now earned over $128M for the studio since it was released five-weeks ago. Voicing characters in the film are Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen. Luc Liu, Kate Hudson, David Cross, Jackie Chan and J.K. Simmons.

The biblical drama “Risen” from Sony Pictures landed in fourth-place overall with $7M at the box-office. The film remained in 2,915 locations nationwide and has now grossed $22.7M in just two-weeks.

Rounding-out the top-five was yet another FOX film, “Eddie the Eagle”. The drama earned $6.3M and opened this weekend at 2,042 locations. The film was directed by Dexter Fletcher, working off a screenplay by Sean Macaulay and Simon Kelton. The film stars Taron Egerton, Tom Costello Jr. and Hugh Jackman.
