If you missed the first trailer for “Free State of Jones” starring Matthew McConaughey while watching the NFL Wildcard game on ABC tonight, the studio has also released the trailer online. You can watch the first official trailer for the film below.

The film, which was written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) stars McConaughey and Keri Russell. Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy.

Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. You can checkout the official trailer for the film that was released tonight thanks to an early upload from the studio.

Joining Matthew McConaughey and Keri Russell in the cast are Gugu Mbatha-Raw amd Mahershala Ali. The film was produced by Scott Stuber, Jon Kilik and Gary Ros.
