Disney’s live-action film adaptations aren’t showing any signs of slowing down over the next few years, a live-action version of “101 Dalmatians” is reportedly hitting the big screen with Emma Stone as the lead character.
That lead character of course is none other than Cruella de Vil herself, the wretched old woman that wanted to steal all of the adorable Dalmatian pups to make them into fashion’s next ‘must-have’ accessory. THR was one of the first publications to announce Stone’s involvement, which she is only in negotiations at this point, but the story won’t be a complete remake of the original.
This new live-action spin-off won’t be a shot-for-shot remake of the classic 1961 animated film that you watched as a child. Instead, Disney will be going through the “Maleficent” angle and telling the back-story of Cruella de Vil before you met her as the terrible fashionista.
Early reports indicate that the script is being written by Kelly Marcel (of Fifty Shades of Grey) and Disney hasn’t decided on a director at this point. The film has one producer at this stage as well and that is Andrew Gunn (Freaky Friday).
This of course won’t be the first time that a popular actor has taken on the role of Cruella de Vil in a Disney film. It was back in 1996 that the unstoppable Glenn Close took on the same role in a live-action/CGI film for the studio.
If you re-watch the classic animated film, it’s rather dark at times. Not only does Cruella de Vil hire thugs to steal the pups away form a lovely couple, she insists they drown all of the puppies in the frigid local waters before they are brought to her to be skinned. It’s not exactly fun-times but it will be incredibly interesting to see how Cruella de Vil became the villainous she-monster that we met as children.
This is just one of the many live-action films that Disney has in the works, including “Dumbo” with Tim Burton, a “Mulan” film, a new “Alice in Wonderland” and of course “Beauty and the Beast” with Emma Watson.
As for Stone, fans can see her in the upcoming film “La La Land,” directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash). Stone will be appearing in the film alongside her ex screen-partner Ryan Gosling. Stone is also set to play the role of Billie Jean King in a remake of the classic tennis-match of “Battle of the Sexes”.
