Independence Day Resurgence trailer, a first look at a long-awaited sequel

FOX was set to release the first trailer for “Independence Day: Resurgence,” the long-awaited follow-up to the 1996 film “Independence Day” today, but it seems to have hit the web a little early. The film won’t release in theaters until next summer but you can get an early look at the upcoming action-adventure film thanks to an early ad-spot released over NFL Sunday.

The studio teases the film stating, “We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force.” The studio adds, “Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

The film was directed by Roland Emmerich, working off a screenplay written by Carter Blanchard and based on the characters created by Dean Devlin. Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser are producing the film.

Starring in the new installment are Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. Joining them on-screen are Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.
